American Universities & Colleges
One factor to be considered when preparing to study
abroad in the U.S.A. is the type of college or
university you will attend. Is a four-year institution
right for you, or will you benefit more from exploring
community colleges in the U.S.A.? Are you planning to
continue your higher education during your study tour?

schools in the United States specializing in developing
the skills of graduate students and professionals in a

Short-Term Study Abroad in the U.S.A.
Short-term study abroad programs have long been
considered a waste of time, money, and even course
credits. The undemanding academic curriculum of these
short "educational tours" had resulted in an unsavory
reputation. Recently, however, short-term study abroad
programs in the U.S.A. have begun to gain the credit
they deserve as a result of current studies. Students
who study in a foreign country for as little as three
weeks have shown to gain a significant amount of
personal and intellectual growth, comparable to students
who have experienced a full semester or year-long
program in a foreign country.
A short-term study abroad program in the U.S.A. provides
international students with a greater understanding and
appreciation of American culture and customs, as well as
a heightened awareness of their own country's distinct
culture, customs and identity. Discover the advantages
of a short-term study abroad in the U.S.A., including

Preparing to Study Abroad in the U.S.A.
Before students set off on an experience of a lifetime,
there are a number of procedures and guidelines that
must be followed to ensure a trouble-free study tour in
America.
U.S. Student Visa
One such procedure is applying for a U.S. student visa.
Once being admitted to your college or university of
choice, your schools will send a SEVIS I-20 or SEVIS
DS-2019. Upon receiving this required document, students
should immediately make an appointment with the
consulate for an American student visa. Applying for a
student visa is a process which should be started well
in advance of your first semester in the United States.

TOEFL Test
In addition to applying for a U.S. student visa,
international students should be prepared to take the
Test of English as a Foreing Language (TOEFL) before
embarking on a study tour in America. American
universities and colleges use the TOEFL test to measure
the English proficiency of international students and
provide assistance when making admission decisions. The
TOEFL has long used a computer-based (CBT) and
paper-based (PBT) format to assess English proficiency,
but the test is now taking on a new image.
The new Internet-based TOEFL is able to capture a test
taker's actual speech and vocabulary. American
universities and colleges can now better assess
potential students' English speaking ability when making
admission decisions. Learn more about TOEFL vocabulary
and speech, including the implementation, delivery and
scoring of the new Internet-based format.
