CEPS/INSTEAD invites
applications for a post-doctoral scholarship to work in
the fields of labourmarket discrimination, inequality
and economic mobility measurement.The post-doc
researcher will join a project supported by the
Luxembourg National Research Fund.The project includes
methodological research (measurement and modelling) and
empirical, micro-econometric analysis of survey data for
Luxembourg (and other European countries) with
particularreference to gender and immigrant assimilation
issues.The post-doc researcher will collaborate with a
small team of researchers and will be expected todevelop
her/his own research activities within this
project.She/he is also expected to be involved in
consulting and training activities for
CEPS/INSTEAD’svisiting researchers and, possibly,
CEPS/INSTEAD’s post-graduate trainees.The candidate is
expected to start in August/September 2007
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate holds a
PhD in a social science discipline –preferably in
economics– withquantitative/micro-econometric
orientation. She/he is familiar with the handling and
analysis oflarge-scale survey datasets (especially panel
data).The candidate must be able –and willing– to carry
out independent research suitable for publicationin
international peer-reviewed journals.High-level computer
literacy and experience with statistical packages (Stata
in particular) is de-manded.Proficiency in English (both
oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an
asset
Duration and grant details
The scholarship duration is
expected to be around 12 months, although a duration of
up to two yearscan possibly be considered.The
scholarship is hosted and administered by CEPS/INSTEAD,
but the grant is actually providedby the Ministry of
Culture, Higher Education and Research (MCESR) of
Luxembourg (“Bourse) According to current rules, the
grant amounts to e2,100 per month. It is meant to cover
livingexpenses of the grantee and does not include
social security contributions. The grantee will
beresearch associate at CEPS/INSTEAD but will not be
bound by any formal employment contract.Appropriate
research infrastructure is provided by CEPS/INSTEAD.
(On-site accommodation canpossibly be arranged at CEPS/INSTEAD
if needed.)

describe the applicant’s interests and expertise and

As
explained above, the successful candidate is expected to
develop independent contributions toour research project
on labour market discrimination, inequality and economic
mobility measure-ment; a project consisting in
methodological research (measurement and modelling) and
empirical,micro-econometric analysis of survey data for
Luxembourg (and other European countries) withparticular
reference to gender and immigrant assimilation issues.
We therefore request applicantsto draft and submit a
research proposal that would fit in our over-arching
project. The quality ofthis proposal and its
compatibility with our research programme will be our
main selection criteria.The proposal should motivate a
(set of) research question(s), outline current state of
knowledgein the field, provide indication of projected
analyses (theoretical and/or empirical), outline
datarequirements and methodology, and describe projected
outcomes.2Finally, the candidate should ask for two
letters of recommendation to be sent in support of
theapplication.The selection will be made by CEPS/INSTEAD
on the basis of this application file. At a secondstage,
the selected candidate will be invited to provide
additional information so that the applicant’sproject
can be submitted jointly by CEPS/INSTEAD and the
applicant to the MCESR who willmake a final decision.
Some limited revisions to the applicant’s research
proposal may be requestedat this stage.Closing date for
application: March 31, 2007. We expect to be able to
make a selection by the endof April
